Brent Fikowski Breaks Down First Two Weeks of CrossFit Open

Brent at 2015 OCT - 1st Overall $20K
Great when we get to hear first hand from the TeamInfinit athletes.  Brent has had a solid start to 2015.  Winning a huge event down in Orange County and starting this year's CrossFit Open in strong fashion.

Two weeks down, three to go.

The 2015 CrossFit Open has been a lot of fun so far.  It was exciting to see a max weight lift in the Open this year, and I think the event they chose to repeat was smart.

The first week was a bit bittersweet for me.  I was very happy with my score in 15.1.  This was a nine minute max effort of toes to bar and lightweight deadlifts/snatches.  Halfway through it became a test of your grip strength as well as your conditioning.  I gave a very honest effort, I don't think I could have done anything differently to get a better score.  15.1a was a bit disappointing.  I had a goal of hitting a 322lb clean and jerk.  With only 6 minutes to establish a max lift I took two lifts to warm up then hit 307lb pretty easily.  I had about 80 seconds to rest then I attempted 322lb.  I failed to get out of the clean.  In hindsight I would have taken 3 lifts and worn a belt.  I believe I could have been successful at 322lb with those two changes.  No matter how long you compete you always learn something and that is what keeps me coming back.  My two scores were still good enough to place me 7th in Canada West.  Unfortunately though I lost to Joe Scali and Mitch Barnard.  We have some friendly bets each week between us three, so my punishment was a pie to the face.

2015 15.2 Open - 341 Reps
The second week of the Open saw a repeat from last year.  Lots of chest to bar pull-ups and 95lb overhead squats.  Last year I placed 26th in the world in this event.  I paced it very well, breaking all the reps up early and came out with a score I hardly believed I accomplished.  So far this year it is crazy to see the improvement within the leaderboard.  So many more athletes around the world are getting scores over 280.  This year I paced it exactly the same as last year.  Near the end I definitely could feel that I had more energy so I hit 8 more reps.  I don't think I could have done anything differently, so I am happy with the result.  Luckily this week I beat Scali so he will be facing a humiliating punishment.
2014 Canada West Regionals - on his way to 260 Max

I am looking forward to the next three weeks.  I am on track to reach my two goals for the Open. The first and most important is qualifying to Regionals in the top heat.  The second goal is to win one Open workout worldwide.  This will require a bit of luck, but each year there is usually one event that is right up my alley.

It was nice having two events with periodic breaks in them that allowed me to sip on some Infinit!  Always refreshing!  Thanks guys for the support, lets finish off these next three weeks and get to Regionals.

Best Regards,

Brent Fikowski

Best of luck the rest of the way Brent!
