Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) - Hell Week!!!

In my past pharmaceutical leadership days we used to throw this term: BHAG around - as a Team we would dream up Big Hairy Audacious Goals that would seem unreasonable to the outside world that we would felt internally we could pull off, but at the same time frightened us!  Last summer a dear friend and riding partner Rick Meloche, out of the blue threw down - "let's do Hell Week".  What is Hell Week?  Rick tells me he has always wanted to do 1000 km in 1-week, starting Monday morning and finishing before bed Sunday evening.  I quickly said ya - sure.

Then, I did the math.  Almost 150 km per day, whoa.  So as is the case, the only way to eat an
elephant is to eat it one bite at a time.  I knew I was travelling to Hamilton Thursday of that week, so one morning was out, but felt all other mornings would be a good way to chunk it, 50-60 km before work, just required me getting up between 4-4:30 am.  Most weekday evenings, I was completing 100 km.  That was until Wednesday when I flatted and learned I had no tire levers with me...aghhhh!  So after being rescued, fixed the tire up and rode in the dark - got 42 km in that evening and was now behind plan.  Thursday and Friday went as planned, I went into the weekend with 325 km left to complete.  I finished 200 km on Saturday around 3 pm as I got a late start and Sunday I finished my 125 by 11:30 am, allowing me to go promote Infinit Cold Brew and Power at the MBA Golf Tournament at Ambassador in the afternoon with Bren - felt great to be out there together relaxing and knowing I had accomplished a huge goal.

Why I am sharing?  I guess to let folks know you don't have to do a marathon, Ironman or a huge costly event, you can chose a goal that both scares and excites you, share it with someone, so there is accountability.  Go explore your limits, you will be glad you did.

I have a couple of big goals this year, tag Team 24 hr Mountain Bike race with Matt K at Albion Hills and I am trying to make way for 1000 km on the road from Ottawa to Quebec, then back in 75 hrs.  I have found personally, since agreeing over a beer at a Christmas party to do a marathon, that having something that both excites and scares me is the key to my overall success.  What I have found over time - is some of the lower key events or goals like Rick threw out, are the most rewarding and memorable.  Whatever you choose, pick something that is a stretch and seems a bit unrealistic.

Note: I prepared this post originally last fall, and today I saw it in my drafts.  My dear friend Rick passed away from a heart attack on Nov 16, I miss him terribly.  Thanks for pushing me Rick, you still are!
Miss you Rick!
