Melissa Bishops: Staying Healthy, Staying Control

What was your main athletic focus prior to COVID-19 actions?

Tokyo 2020. It would be my 3rd Olympic Games and my first International team since coming back from having our daughter, Corinne.

Understand you may not have a definitive competition schedule at the moment, how are you approaching your training now?

We are in a holding pattern as to what our competition schedule might look like later this summer; for now, we are going back to base training and focusing more on strength work. Long, hard runs and weight room exercises to increase our strength.

What positives, if any, can you take from our situation with respect to your training and being best prepared for a return to competition?

This will give me one more year to gain back some strength, speed, and overall fitness that I lost from pregnancy. I was really coming into form as of this winter, so with this set back I think we can really be stronger and fitter come Tokyo 2021.

How has your training benefitted your mental state as we Canadians maintain social distancing?

Being able to get a run in or even a 45min, pilates class has really helped to keep spirits high. Sweating once a day really helps my mental state.

Looking forward to see an even stronger Melissa Bishop in 2021.  Thanks for sharing.
