Nathan Drouillard: Staying Healthy, Staying Home

What was your main athletic focus prior to COVID-19 actions?

My main focus for 2020 was the ITU Age-Group World Championships in Edmonton. The ITU has not made a decision yet with regards to this event (as of April 14th), but it will likely be postponed to 2021.

Understand you may not have a definitive competition schedule at the moment, how are you approaching your
training now?

This situation provides a good opportunity for me to focus on becoming a better athlete as a whole. This means more strength training, yoga, and dry-land swim activation. I'm also just patiently banking running and cycling mileage. Not having any races on the calendar gives me a flexibility in my training that I otherwise wouldn't have.

What positives, if any, can you take from our situation with respect to your training and being best prepared for a return to competition?

Luckily, I really do enjoy the process of training itself. So, I'm approaching training with the same amount of intensity as I normally would. This situation allows me to focus on improving in certain areas that sometimes get neglected, and to hopefully become a more well-rounded athlete going in to next season.

How has your training benefitted your mental state as we Canadians maintain social distancing?

Exercise has always been the main thing that I lean on when it comes to my mental health, and this has been especially true during the last month. Even just walking the dog or doing 15 minutes of yoga some days is enough to keep me going.

Any other comments?

I hope that everyone is staying safe and sane. We'll get through this together!

We will get through this together and apart Nathan.  Thanks for sharing.
