Stephanie Gowanlock: Staying Home, Staying Healthy

What was your main athletic focus prior to COVID-19 actions?

Prior to COVID-19 I was in prep for The Canadian National Weightlifting Championships which was coming up and would have taken place mid May!  My main goal here was to get back at it (post babies) and continue to improve my total from previous competitions in hopes to grow even stronger for next season!

Understand you may not have a definitive competition schedule at the moment, how are you approaching your training now?

Now that everything has been postponed or canceled I’m currently trying to maintain my strength in the Classic lifts but take a bit of a load off to let some nagging injuries settle while I push some fun conditioning and Focus on brushing up my skills with lighter technique drills. I’m staying consistent regardless!

What positives, if any, can you take from our situation with respect to your training and being best prepared for a return to competition?

I always say as hard and frustrating set backs can be it’s always a blessing in disguise! If we can’t do one thing we work on another but the main thing is that we must keep moving! Its an opportunity to work on the little things that have been put on the back burner during competitive season like technical fixes and just building strength in general. It can be easy for someone to just give up when times get tough but the goals and dreams still stand no matter what the timeline and that alone is motivation to keep on going!

I am lucky enough to have a full home garage gym so my training will continue to stay as consistent as possible as time goes on through this situation so that I’ll be primed and ready to start pushing when the time comes to get back to competition!!

How has your training benefitted your mental state as we Canadians maintain social distancing?

Still being able to train at home has been an extremely important factor in my mental state!

It’s definitely different trying to train with my children around at all times but 100 times better then no training.  I think we will be stronger coming out of this when we are able to go back to proper training facilities since having to self motivate at home and focus extra hard while in a garage has been a challenge. But we are doing it and we need to keep at it no matter what restrictions we have, there is always something we can be working on to make better!

I agree completely, a stressor like our current, forces you to take stock and a find a new path.  I think many of us will be stronger in our new normal.
