vEveresting - 648 k (647812 m)

 What a day!  Just a quick recap for those who participated yesterday - when everything was said and done - we ended up with 93 climbing Alpe Du Zwift.  Some went way further than expected, Attila and Sandra come to mind - crazy efforts.  A few had life get in the way, a few computer issues, a Kickr died (let us know Andrew when you attempt your vEveresting as an 80 year old - I want to be part of that) and we had a few physical challenges - mainly due to gearing.

Was a blast to be surrounded by this group for better than 12 hrs - for certain it was a big part of me getting it done. 

Here is a quick summary of yesterdays assault on Everest, crazy this group ascended 647812 m a hair under 648 km.

We are somehow connected now, if we weren't before.  Would love to see us tackle another epic challenge in the future.  We will see what life throws at us.

Last Scheduled - vEveresting-ADZ - Hope You Have A Blast!!!

 So here it is.  I am sure there are going to be lots of changes, its all good.  Change your jersey if you wish to and add vEveresting-ADZ to your profile name.

For the schedule below - the rider highlighted in Green is leading the Meet-Up, if you want to join a group or move from one to another - follow the highlighted rider on Zwift and hopefully the leader will invite you.  No harm if not, we all know where we are going.

It will get dark out there - if you see another rider, encourage them, give them a ride on.  We will be better together.

vEveresting - What if Zwift Crashes?

 This may have crossed your mind, what happens if I lose my internet or Zwift crashes mid-ride?  All is not lost, as I found out from Andy at Hells (Everesting).  

When I asked Andy that question he said: In the event of a system crash, just ask your rider to start a new activity, and they can either stitch the two files together afterwards, or submit one file and link to the other, either option is fine.  

I was planning on taking the following screen shots during the day on my Zwift companion app:

Taking a photo at the base of the hill prior to each climb and after you have passed under the banner at the top.  Having these could be helpful if you have a major crash.

If I experienced a loss of internet or a system crash, after getting everything back up and running, I would simply request to ride with someone (that I follow on Zwift) that was a little lower on the climb than I was when it crashed.  Once in, I would take a photo of where I was, upon restarting.  After the ride as recommended by Andy, from Hells I would have two files to submit, I would likely be over cautious and ride a bit extra to absolutely ensure I exceeded my goal elevation.

We have lots of time out there, snap those photos at the top and bottom, these with the Zwift/Strava files will be more than enough to satisfy the folks that will enter you into the Hall of Fame.

vEveresting-ADZ Checklist - Jan 30/21

Soon, many of us will spend the most time we have ever spent on an indoor trainer, unless of course your name is Ed Veal.  I thought I would share my prep plan, it will serve a couple of purposes - one it will ensure I have my stuff straight and perhaps it will give you a couple of ideas.

My goal is to get through the full vEveresting as comfortably as possible, while going as fast as I am trained to go.  With that in mind, here is my plan.

The night before I will prepare 10 serving of my Custom Blend - has 250 cal per serving.   I expect to take in 1.5 servings (900 ml) per ascent.  I was able to take 8 servings in for my 5 X ADZ earlier with some additional water and a Cold Brew - in total I took in 5600 ml and still lost little more than 4 pounds - this equated to 2.1% dehydration - not bad.  But if you double that effort, I could expect to be around 4% dehydrated, I won't want to be much more than that.  Having the 10 servings the night before will on require me to mix up my nutrition once during the day, the rest of the time as soon as I start my descent and I am off the bike I will fill my two bottles.  

Additional nutrition that I will have on hand is Cold Brew - I find this drink every 3-4 hrs on the bike serves me well - sits well, gives me a caffeine hit and a whack of protein.  I will likely take this two or 3 times during the ride.  I will have clear water on hand at all times - my goal is to have to urinate when I get off the bike at the top of each climb, but not have to get off the bike during a climb up.  If this is the case, it means I am relatively hydrated.  I will measure my weight several times during the day to check my weight / hydration levels.  Being reasonably hydrated during an ultra effort is one of the keys to achieving your potential.

My gearing is all set at this point.  I am going with 34T on front small ring with a 11-34T cassette on the back.  This is allows me to comfortably turn the pedals - even at 14%, feels ok - likely not the case on lap 8!  

I will have 3 sets of bib shorts on hand - all good quality and coated with Chamois Butt'r.  Likely change after 3 ascents and then again after 6.  I may grab a little cream between laps - we will see.  

One of the keys to staying comfortable is staying reasonable dry.  Ed Veal taught me this, he has done multiple 24 hr sessions, I was surprised to learn from him that he remains dry - even though he pushes big power - it is his multiple fan set up.  For the day of, I will be using 2 industrial fan - to keep dry and comfortable.  

My pacing will be about 75% of my FTP - hoping to hold 215 watts at 125-130 hr.  I have know experience after 5 laps, it is conceivable and expected that as I get a little dehydrated that my heart rate may creep up a bit, hope I can keep it below 130 average for each ascent after the 5th, we will see.

I will have 2 extra pairs of socks and I have another set of shoes handy, just in case I get some sore spots on the bottom of my feet.  I wore different shoes previously on super long events, the slight differences on the pressure points can sometimes provide some added relief.

I will have some solid food on hand, snacks mainly salty nuts and perhaps some potato chips - just something to look forward to as a reward at the top of a climb.

We all know we will have 10-12 minutes rest after each climb, have a plan to optimize this time having your feet elevated for 5 minutes during this break may be helpful, the tighter the plan for the must haves will give you more time for the nice to dos.

vEveresting - Jan 30th - Latest Schedule

Team - quick update on the schedule as it sits today.  The significance of the yellow highlighting, simply the Zwift Names that I was able to find and follow (or request to follow).

vEveresting January 30th - Details

I am super excited about the number of riders we have planning on riding the Alpe Du Zwift course this coming Saturday.  By the time Saturday comes around, we will have more than 100 taking part, the majority attempting a full vEveresting.  I must stress - You Do You!  What I mean is do what is comfortable for you - I was lucky enough to secure the perfect gearing (I think) to get up the hill 8.5 times without stressing my body too much.  By now most of understand the rules - 100% trainer difficulty is required to have your ride recognized by the Everesting Team - if this will put undue pressure on your knees because you don't have the gearing to support a higher cadence - adjust your trainer difficulty.   First and foremost, I want you to enjoy the day and find your limits.  For most of us, we will be on our trainers longer than ever before.  Have fun and embrace the suck.

The group of riders have selected 1 of 3 goals - full vEveresting, vBasecamp or vEveresting-Team.  

vEveresting-Team Guidelines

We have 4 Teams at the moment - 3 of them will be treating it as a virtual relay.  For those Teams, only the first rider will be starting at the prescribed time (see Meet-Ups below).  The other riders on the Team will coordinate with the rider before them, ensuring they are at the base of the hill by the time that rider hits the bottom of the climb.  A few options for this - either ride in from Road to Sky and be waiting at the start of the climb, then when your rider comes across you start climbing OR meet that rider when they are descending, ride with them on the way down and then Uturn after you break the beam at the bottom (bottom left).

For the Team that is all starting at the same time - you can follow the guidance below for the vBasecamp & vEveresting riders just stop after two laps or.....

vBasecamp & vEveresting Riders

I will post a schedule separately - most of you have given me a time that you are looking to start and your Zwift name.  If the scheduled time becomes an issue, there is absolutely nothing to stress about - ride when you can.  The idea of the groups and Meet-Ups starting on the hour is to have a group of riders to start with and to say hello/good luck.  The Meet-Up is 5.2 km long, long enough to get you past this:

But ends before we hit the climb.  This just allows for an easy roll in and for the meetup to end so the U-Turn functionality is there when we get to the top.  Other thing it does is, it ensures we see all the other riders out on the course, not just a Meet-up view.

I have set up a Meet-Up for 3 am EST, my start time - I can only add those that follow me in Zwift.  When you see the schedule on the subsequent post - it will show the Zwift names I have, the ones highlighted in yellow I was able to find and follow.  Follow one another if you wish, this will allow for your being added to the invite list for the Meet-Up.  If you are you are able to create a Meet-Up for your start wave - please email be directly and I will coordinate with you.  Thanks!

What is important is that you ascend and descend the ADZ 8.5 times for vEveresting and 4.25 times for vBasecamp.  If you are doing the vEveresting the Route Achievement badge should show up.  You do your math - you can see from the image below from the start of Road to Sky it is about 25 m elevation gain to the base of the hill - you need 8848 m on top of this 25 m to get the vEveresting and 4424 m more for the vBasecamp.  Ride a few extra meters to be sure!
We will have a Discord channel set-up.  As mentioned I am a complete novice.  Today I road tested it with Ed Veal, and I think we are set.  I see that some of you have managed to find me.  There is only a general channel, this link will get you in:

I will be starting this channel at 3 am or so on the 30th.  I will leave it open as long as it is adding value to the ride.  Based on input, I have selected Push to Talk functionality - means that you will will only be heard when you are pushing and holding down the Push To Talk button - this ensures you are only heard when you wish to be.  Like a walkie talkie if you are old enough to get that reference 😃 For this ride, I will be right along side all of you pushing to my limits - so likely won't be leading any long conversations, it is just there for those that wish to talk to one another.  You can enter and exit all day as you wish and can text.  Other forms of communications of course are through the Zwift Companion app.  I have personally followed or requested to follow everyone that has provide Zwift names to date - this for me will just be a distraction through out the day.  

The night before the ride, I would request that you change your jersey to:

This jersey is available early on in the Zwift environment, so everyone should be able to select this jersey.  Also, ideally you could change your profile name to something like this: Darcy vEveresting-ADZ.  Changing your last name night before will allow folks to see your current name in the meantime and then on the day of the suffix (as the last name) will allow us to recognize one another when we are all out there.

I want you to all to achieve your goal.  Pace this, stay hydrated (hydrate well over the next few days), if you have some dark moments (and you will) gain some inspiration from all of those around you.  Visualize over the next few days - achieving your goal, you've got this.

I will go silent on Friday - no additional communications after Friday morning until I see you all on the hill.  We have a rider from NZ starting really early - before 12 midnight EST, based on his timezone and our latest rider starting at 12:30 pm EST - Andrew G at 80 years young is going for 10000 m.  So Cool!

Infinit vEveresting Alpe Du Zwift - Schedule (So Far!)

Ok folks - here is what I have so far.  Nothing cast in stone if something comes up and you have to flip to another group fine.  I suspect over the next week we will have a lot more added, just posting what I have confirmed now, with goal ride, start time and Zwift Name.  I would encourage you all to follow everyone on this in the Zwift World - when you follow folks and they are out on the course with Zwift Companion

makes it easier to recognize folks to interact and encourage one another.  We will all be pushing our limits, whether that is completing a given distance or completing a distance within a certain amount of time.

Really looking forward to sharing this experience with all of you.  As you will see below, we have some folks across the pond starting at 6 am their time, Dionne is here in Windsor-Essex, she likes the midnight start.  Once we get to 3 am, you start to have folks from North America starting, with our bigger waves at 4 am, 5 am, 6 am & 7 am - there will be lots of traffic by the time the sun rises!  

Admittedly, I am an absolute novice using Discord, I have set up a channel - you can join by installing the app and joining my channel DarcyHaggith where we will have a veveresting-adz voice channel.  This will allow for some voice chatting during the ride if you want and need a distraction.  Here is the link to join:   I know that Ed Veal has had some Zoom Meeting set up for other long rides he has done - I am game for that too, if there is an interest.  The only thing, I would caution if you have limited bandwidth for your internet, I wouldn't want you to affect your result - especially if you are looking to submit results to Hells - Everesting site.

We will have Zwift Meet Ups for every time slot we have more than one rider for.  I will tap someone on the shoulder to set-up the Meet-Up for each give time.  As was recommended by Mike Coughlin - we will use the Road to Sky Course for the meet up and set the duration to 5.2 km only, this allows the group to break the green shield and end the meet-up just before the climb starts.  Ending the meetup allows for the U-Turn function that you will utilize as soon as you pass under the banner at the top.
